Board work in Cairns
Coastal meter boxes, resort plant boards, and vessel distribution.
Far North Queensland is the hardest environment in the country for a printed board label. Cairns meter boxes sit in salt air and near-vertical sun, and switchroom doors get opened in humidity that peels adhesive off within a couple of wet seasons. Boards up here get relabelled far more often than boards down south — usually because the identification failed, not because the circuits changed.
The work itself is resorts, hospitality, and marine. Plant room boards for accommodation and pool plant, kitchen and cool-room circuit identification, and distribution boards on vessels where the same panel carries shore power and generator supply and the changeover has to be unambiguous. We engrave four hours down the Bruce Highway, so Cairns is a one-to-two day freight leg rather than a mainland-to-FNQ one.

“Great service and communication”
“Hi recently had solar panels installed, but the installer did a messy job on my switchboard. The moved all the switches around, but didn't move any of the existing labels, and the new labels were just label maker and the terminology was non complaint (failed and Office of the Technical Regulator audit). I took it on myself to get professionally laser cut labels to replace the dodgy label maker/hand written and non-compliant language. RBZ3D was easy to use to make all the labels I need, shipped quick enough, and now the labels look so much better. Would definitely recommend and use again.”
“Treff labels supplied as requested, great job thank you”
On the escutcheon
The boards we label in Cairns.
Every set is engraved to your schedule and sorted so it can be fitted in order — one board or a whole site.
Coastal meter boxes & mains boards
Main switch and circuit identification engraved rather than printed — the text is cut into the material, so salt air, humidity, and UV have nothing to lift or fade.
Resort & hospitality plant boards
Pool plant, kitchen, cool room, and accommodation block circuit identification for boards that get opened by whoever is on shift, not by the electrician who wired them.
Vessel & shore power boards
Shore supply, generator, and changeover identification for reef fleet and charter vessel distribution boards, plus board ID tags for the panels themselves.
Solar isolator sets
DC and AC isolator labels, array warnings, and shutdown procedures for FNQ install schedules — bulk sets ordered per job rather than per label.
Relabelling failed identification
Where the old printed schedule has gone unreadable, send a photo of the board and the circuit list and the replacement set comes back sized to the existing label positions.

Standards framing
Straight about what a label can claim.
AS/NZS 3000 clause 2.8 asks that switchboard labelling be permanent, legible for the life of the installation, and clear about which circuit and equipment each label identifies. Engraved traffolyte meets the durability and permanence requirements of that clause, because the text is cut into the material rather than printed onto it — there is no ink to fade and no film to lift.
Solar and battery — the one place testing is required
Solar goes further than AS/NZS 3000. The Clean Energy Council’s Advice on Labelling (Version 2, June 2023) requires any label exposed to direct sunlight to be UV resistant, demonstrated by passing IEC 60068-2-5:2018 — a 720-hour accelerated weathering test.
Section 3.1.1 of that document carries an exception: it does not apply to markings that are physically engraved, embossed or etched with durable markings. Engraving is exempt because the marking is the material — there is no printed surface to fade.
The practical difference: a printed or vinyl label in direct sun needs that test report to show it meets the requirement. An engraved one doesn’t. If your supplier can’t produce the report, you can’t demonstrate the label complies.
Read the full breakdown → CER photo evidence and the CEC labelling guideWhat we will not tell you
- ·That the material is “certified” or “approved”. There is no certification scheme for engraving laminate and no inspector approval scheme for labels. A supplier using those words is selling you a word.
- ·That a label makes an installation compliant. Compliance is the installation, the documentation and the person who signed it — a label is one durable part of that.
- ·What your board should say. Josh holds an electrical licence and is happy to talk it through, but the wording call belongs to whoever is responsible for the job.
Common questions
Quick answers.
Do engraved board labels hold up in Far North Queensland meter boxes?
Yes — that is the reason most Cairns relabelling jobs come to us. Engraved traffolyte carries its contrast in the material rather than in ink or a printed film, so there is no layer for humidity, salt air, or UV to lift. Printed and vinyl board labels in FNQ commonly fail well inside the life of the installation.
How quickly do board labels reach Cairns?
We engrave in Townsville, roughly four hours down the highway. After 1–3 business days production, tracked post typically reaches Cairns in 2–4 business days and express in around 1–2. Australia Post timeframes are indicative; Priority Air is the most consistent lane when a date is locked in.
What does AS/NZS 3000 require on a Cairns switchboard?
Clause 2.8 of the Wiring Rules deals with identification: switchboard labelling has to be permanent, legible for the life of the installation, and clear about which circuit or equipment each label refers to. Engraved traffolyte satisfies all three by construction — the text is cut into the material rather than printed onto it, so there is nothing to fade, peel, or rub away.
How do I send a whole board schedule?
Use the bulk tool in the Label Designer — one row per label, paste or type the schedule, and every label is priced as you go. If you would rather not type it, send a photo of the board or a copy of the schedule through Quick Quote and it comes back priced within one business day.
Who makes them, and where?
Josh, a licensed electrician, on one CO2 laser in Townsville, Queensland. Every Cairns order is engraved to order here, checked, and shipped tracked — no outsourcing, no reselling somebody else's labels.
