Traffolyte
Engraving Laminate Labels
What is Traffolyte?
Traffolyte is a multi-layered plastic laminate designed specifically for engraved labels and signage. It consists of two or more thin layers of different coloured material bonded together. When the top layer is laser engraved, the contrasting colour underneath is revealed, producing crisp, permanent text.
The name "traffolyte" is used interchangeably with "engraving laminate" across the Australian electrical and industrial trades. The material has been the industry standard for professional labelling since 1927.
The base material is typically modified acrylic — it machines cleanly, engraves well with CO2 lasers, and comes in a wide range of colour combinations. Every label we produce at RBZ 3D is laser engraved from quality engraving laminate and cut to your exact dimensions.
Why Traffolyte?
Permanent
Engraved text is physically carved into the material. It cannot fade, peel, or rub off. Labels last decades.
Non-Conductive
Electrically insulating — safe for use inside switchboards and on electrical equipment.
UV Stable
Resists yellowing and colour fading from sun exposure. Suitable for outdoor installations.
Chemical Resistant
Withstands common chemicals, solvents, and cleaning agents found in industrial environments.
Self-Extinguishing
Stops burning when the flame source is removed. Important for electrical applications.
Clean Engraving
Cuts and engraves cleanly without chipping or melting. Sharp edges, fine detail down to 2mm text.
Colour Combinations
Colour choice isn't just aesthetic — Australian Standards and workplace safety regulations often dictate specific colours. Red for emergency circuits, yellow for caution and gas, green for safety.

Common Questions
What is traffolyte?
Traffolyte is a multi-layered engraving laminate. When the top layer is laser engraved, the contrasting colour underneath is revealed, producing permanent text and graphics. It has been the Australian industry standard for engraved labels since 1927.
Is traffolyte the same as engraving laminate?
Yes. Traffolyte is the common trade name for phenolic or acrylic engraving laminate. The terms are used interchangeably in Australia.
How durable are traffolyte labels?
Extremely durable. The engraved text is physically carved into the material, not printed. It cannot fade, peel, or rub off. Traffolyte is UV stable, chemical resistant, and electrically non-conductive. Labels last decades in indoor and outdoor environments.
What thickness should I choose?
0.8mm is the most popular for general switchboard labels. 1.6mm provides extra rigidity for larger signs. We offer multiple thickness options depending on the material.
