What it is
Two layers. One permanent label.
Traffolyte is engraving laminate — a thin colour cap bonded permanently to a contrasting core. When a laser cuts through the cap, the core shows through. The text isn't printed, isn't stuck on. It's the actual physical structure of the material.
Ink can fade. Adhesive vinyl can peel. Engraved traffolyte can't — there's nothing to remove. UV stable, heat resistant, electrically non-conductive, accepted by every Australian electrical inspector.
- ·Permanent — won't fade, peel, or rub off
- ·UV stable for outdoor switchboards and solar tags
- ·Self-extinguishing in electrical applications
- ·Cuts cleanly into any shape — rectangles, circles, custom outlines
RBZ 3D engraves custom traffolyte labels and signs to order in Townsville, Queensland — designed online with instant per-label pricing, engraved by a licensed electrician within 1–3 business days, with no minimum order and tracked shipping Australia-wide.

- Construction
- Two-layer engraving laminate — a thin colour cap permanently bonded to a contrasting core. The laser cuts through the cap so the core reads as the text.
- Thickness
- 1.6 mm is standard stock and the default. 0.8 mm suits thin switchboard circuit labels; thicker stock is used for rigid signs, valve tags and equipment plates.
- Fixing
- Self-adhesive backing, drilled mounting holes on your hole centres, or slotted holes for cable ties and tie wire. Specify per line on the order.
- Colour range
- Black/white, white/black, red/white, yellow/black, blue/white and green/white are everyday stock. Additional colours and brushed metal-look laminates are special order.
- Sizes & shapes
- Cut to your dimensions, from small circuit IDs up to full-sheet door signs (sheet stock is 600 × 300 mm). Rectangle, radiused, circle, oval and tombstone profiles, plus engraved cutouts.
- Durability
- UV stable, heat resistant, chemically resistant and electrically non-conductive. Nothing to fade, smudge or peel, because the contrast is the material rather than ink.
Who we supply
Traffolyte goes out to trade, not retail.
One label or a manufacturing run — same stock, same laser, same operator. Only the ordering path changes.
Electricians
Per-job label sets priced on screen, no account and no minimum required to order.
Switchboard & panel builders
Matched legend sets engraved to one schedule so a run of panels reads identically batch to batch.
OEMs & manufacturers
Repeat legend and nameplate runs against artwork held on file — a reorder, not a fresh setup.
Mining, industry & facilities
Valve tags, plant identification, isolation tags and plant-room signage built for dust, heat and washdown.
Trade accounts with 30-day terms are available — how we supply the trade or apply for an account.

Standards framing
Straight about what a label can claim.
AS/NZS 3000 clause 2.8 asks that switchboard labelling be permanent, legible for the life of the installation, and clear about which circuit and equipment each label identifies. Engraved traffolyte meets the durability and permanence requirements of that clause, because the text is cut into the material rather than printed onto it — there is no ink to fade and no film to lift.
What we will not tell you
- ·That the material is “certified” or “approved”. There is no certification scheme for engraving laminate and no inspector approval scheme for labels. A supplier using those words is selling you a word.
- ·That a label makes an installation compliant. Compliance is the installation, the documentation and the person who signed it — a label is one durable part of that.
- ·What your board should say. Josh holds an electrical licence and is happy to talk it through, but the wording call belongs to whoever is responsible for the job.
Common questions
Quick answers.
What is traffolyte?
Traffolyte is a multi-layered engraving laminate. When the top colour layer is laser engraved, the contrasting core underneath is revealed, producing permanent text. It has been the Australian industry standard for engraved labels and signs since 1927.
Is traffolyte the same as engraving laminate?
Yes. Traffolyte is the trade name in Australia for what's generically called engraving laminate or two-ply engraving plastic. The terms are used interchangeably.
What's the difference between a traffolyte label and a traffolyte sign?
Same material, same construction — the difference is just size and use. A switchboard circuit ID is usually called a label. A larger PV warning, valve tag, or door sign is usually called a sign. We make both at any dimension.
How durable are traffolyte labels?
Extremely. The engraving is physically carved into the material — it can't fade, peel, or rub off. UV stable, heat resistant, chemically resistant, electrically non-conductive. Labels last decades indoors and outdoors.
What thickness should I choose?
0.8mm is most common for switchboard circuit labels. 1.6mm gives extra rigidity for larger signs, valve tags, and equipment plates. We default to 1.6mm unless you specify otherwise.
Can I order traffolyte online?
Yes. Use the Label Designer to choose colour, size, text, and shape (rectangle, rounded, circle, oval, tombstone) and get an instant price. No minimum order — order one or order a thousand.
How much do traffolyte labels cost?
Small switchboard circuit labels start around $3 each, a standard 100 × 50 mm main switch label is around $6, and prices drop with quantity. See the traffolyte label prices page for a full size-by-size breakdown, or price your exact label in the designer.
