Distribution switchboard with engraved circuit identification labels fitted above the breakers

Board work in Melbourne

Motor control centres, plant switchrooms, and commercial DBs.

Melbourne's switchboard work splits between the manufacturing belt and the commercial towers. On the industrial side it is motor control centres and plant switchrooms — bucket and starter identification, isolator labels, and legend plates that tell an operator which line the starter feeds rather than just which breaker it is. That labelling has to be readable from the aisle, not from arm's length.

On the commercial side it is distribution board schedules for fit-outs and retrofits. A lot of Melbourne stock is older, so escutcheon cutouts and label positions are rarely a standard size — send the dimensions off the old label or the cutout and we engrave to that, rather than making you drill new holes to suit a stock label.

What customers are saying

As soon as I had put my order in, Josh was on the phone to me to adjust a few things to make sure it was 100% right. Couldn’t ask for better service and transparency from designing all the way to picking up the labels.

Hi recently had solar panels installed, but the installer did a messy job on my switchboard. The moved all the switches around, but didn't move any of the existing labels, and the new labels were just label maker and the terminology was non complaint (failed and Office of the Technical Regulator audit). I took it on myself to get professionally laser cut labels to replace the dodgy label maker/hand written and non-compliant language. RBZ3D was easy to use to make all the labels I need, shipped quick enough, and now the labels look so much better. Would definitely recommend and use again.

On the escutcheon

The boards we label in Melbourne.

Every set is engraved to your schedule and sorted so it can be fitted in order — one board or a whole site.

MCC bucket & starter labels

Motor starter identification, bucket numbering, and drive references for plants through Dandenong, Laverton, and the western industrial belt — sized to be read from the switchroom aisle.

Plant switchroom boards

Incomer and tie identification, isolator labels, and door-mounted legend cards for process switchrooms where the board feeds equipment nobody can identify by breaker number alone.

Commercial DB schedules

Full circuit schedules for CBD and metro fit-outs — engraved circuit IDs, main switch labels, and RCD identification for boards handed over to a building manager who will never open a drawing.

Non-standard escutcheon sizes

Older Melbourne boards rarely take a stock label. Send the cutout dimensions or the old label itself and the replacement is engraved to match, holes and all.

Switchboard builder runs

OEM label sets engraved to your schedule with consistent sizing across the production run — supplied loose or on backing tape, ready to go straight onto escutcheons.

Standards framing

Straight about what a label can claim.

AS/NZS 3000 clause 2.8 asks that switchboard labelling be permanent, legible for the life of the installation, and clear about which circuit and equipment each label identifies. Engraved traffolyte meets the durability and permanence requirements of that clause, because the text is cut into the material rather than printed onto it — there is no ink to fade and no film to lift.

Solar and battery — the one place testing is required

Solar goes further than AS/NZS 3000. The Clean Energy Council’s Advice on Labelling (Version 2, June 2023) requires any label exposed to direct sunlight to be UV resistant, demonstrated by passing IEC 60068-2-5:2018 — a 720-hour accelerated weathering test.

Section 3.1.1 of that document carries an exception: it does not apply to markings that are physically engraved, embossed or etched with durable markings. Engraving is exempt because the marking is the material — there is no printed surface to fade.

The practical difference: a printed or vinyl label in direct sun needs that test report to show it meets the requirement. An engraved one doesn’t. If your supplier can’t produce the report, you can’t demonstrate the label complies.

What we will not tell you

  • ·That the material is “certified” or “approved”. There is no certification scheme for engraving laminate and no inspector approval scheme for labels. A supplier using those words is selling you a word.
  • ·That a label makes an installation compliant. Compliance is the installation, the documentation and the person who signed it — a label is one durable part of that.
  • ·What your board should say. Josh holds an electrical licence and is happy to talk it through, but the wording call belongs to whoever is responsible for the job.

Common questions

Quick answers.

Do you make MCC and motor starter labels for Melbourne plants?

Yes — bucket numbers, starter and drive identification, isolator labels, and door legend plates. Send the MCC schedule as a list, one row per label, and the whole line-up is priced instantly in the bulk tool and engraved as one run so the sizing is identical across the board.

Can you engrave labels to fit an older board's escutcheon cutouts?

Yes. Custom sizes cost the same as standard sizes — the price is worked from the area, not from a size menu. Measure the cutout or the existing label, or post us the old one, and the replacement comes back to those dimensions with the mounting holes where you need them.

What does AS/NZS 3000 require on a Melbourne switchboard?

Clause 2.8 of the Wiring Rules deals with identification: switchboard labelling has to be permanent, legible for the life of the installation, and clear about which circuit or equipment each label refers to. Engraved traffolyte satisfies all three by construction — the text is cut into the material rather than printed onto it, so there is nothing to fade, peel, or rub away.

How do I send a whole board schedule?

Use the bulk tool in the Label Designer — one row per label, paste or type the schedule, and every label is priced as you go. If you would rather not type it, send a photo of the board or a copy of the schedule through Quick Quote and it comes back priced within one business day.

Who makes them, and where?

Josh, a licensed electrician, on one CO2 laser in Townsville, Queensland. Every Melbourne order is engraved to order here, checked, and shipped tracked — no outsourcing, no reselling somebody else's labels.
